Heirloom tomatoes have been increasing in popularity because of the delicious taste of the plants. The description of heirloom tomatoes is sometimes hard to explain. In the truest sense heirloom tomatoes are sophisticated, nurtured and handed down from one generation of plants to the next generation.
When you talk about heirloom tomatoes the word open-pollination will come into the discussion. So what is open pollination?
Open pollinated plants are different types of plants that can be grown from their own seeds. So in other words when you plant something that is open pollinated you can save the seeds from that plant to plant the same thing the next year. Many people use these seeds because they tend to reduce risk to disease.
Hybrid plants or seed that is genetically grown or treated are not heirloom plants in definition of the true meaning of heirloom plants. Most heirloom plants that are grown are organically grown. Hybrid plants if grown year after year will never look the same; because of this seeds like heirloom tomatoes will be required for future crop growth.
So what draws a person or even the farmers to growing heirloom tomatoes?
People are always in search of the food that originated when they were young. Whether that is a sweet potato, peaches and cream corn on the cob, and tomatoes that really taste like tomatoes. Heirloom plants or heirloom tomatoes for example can be very delicious and tasty like the new big dwarf tomato that has been around for nearly 90 years and is pink in color.
So which tomatoes do you chose?
There are several different kinds of tomatoes to choose from. It all depends on taste and depends on what you are cooking. There are heirloom tomatoes that can be 4 oz or all the way up to 32 oz or more. Probably one of the more popular heirloom tomatoes are the beefsteak tomatoes although the beefmaster tomato is allegedly the best version of the beefsteak tomato but is a hybrid plant.
Heirloom tomatoes are growing in popularity which mainly has to do with the way that the heirloom plant is grown, but several hybrid plants are still very popular in their own right. Either way taste will be the main factor in which type of tomato you chose.
